Wholemeal Pitta Bread
Ingredients
- ½ tsp. dried yeast (fast action)
- 250 gr. (9 oz.) strong wholemeal flour
- ½ tsp. sugar
- ½ tsp. salt
- 150 ml. (5 fl. oz.) water
- This bread was made with the Panasonic breadmaker SD 253
- Prior to baking, preheat oven to 230ºC
Method
First, take the bread pan out of the machine.
Place the dried yeast in the pan, cover it with the wholemeal flour and sprinkle in the sugar and salt. Pour over the water.
Put the bread pan back in the machine.
Press select to choose the Pizza option (45 minutes). Press Start.
When the dough making is complete, remove from the bread pan.
Knead lightly and divide the dough into 4. Roll each out into an oval shape measuring 20cm x 10cm (8”x4”) approx.
Place onto a baking tray and leave to prove for about 10 minutes.
Bake in the hot oven for between 5-8 minutes. If you are using right away, leave them to brown otherwise allow for them being reheated before serving.
Wrap the pitta breads in a clean, damp tea towel to keep them soft.
Serve on their own with a meal or filled with meats and salad. For a hot filling, lightly toast the pitta bread first.
